Equinor supports the Paris Agreement and aims to take a leading position in the energy transition. Equinor cuts own emissions from oil and gas activities, invests ambitiously in renewables, and aims to become a net zero company, including emissions from production and use of energy, by 2050. Equinor believes that hydrogen will make a key contribution in the energy transition as an environmental-friendly energy carrier. Equinor join forces with industry partners in development of low-carbon hydrogen for decarbonizing industrial clusters in UK (H2H Saltend), North West Europe (H2morrow steel, H2Be) and participates in Europe’s biggest green hydrogen projects (NortH2 and AquaSector). Equinor’s main focus is on the production of hydrogen but participates in technology development along the whole hydrogen value chain, including storage. Underground storage of large volumes of hydrogen is needed to balance out differences in production and consumption of hydrogen.
Role in the project
To build knowledge and reduce risks related to hydrogen storage, Equinor’s Technology, Digitalisation and Innovation organization has become a late participant in the HyPSTER project. Equinor will contribute with a new work package on bio-risks related to hydrogen storage in salt caverns and assessment of hydrogen purification technologies.
